Lex stepped into the ladies
room, glancing quickly under the doors of the four stalls, making sure she was
alone.
She’d hit the club earlier that
evening after a really stressful day at the travel agency office where she
worked. She’d been really glad to see Diana show at the club and wanted to talk
to her about the administrative opening the brunette had mentioned at the
studio a few days earlier.
‘If I have to put up with that idiot of a boss much longer, I’ll
be sending him on a one way trip to somewhere so far off the beaten track,
he’ll have to have tweezers and a witch-doctor to find his way back!’
Having finished with the call
of Mother Nature and washed up a bit, Lex decided to give herself a rare treat
for once. She slipped back to the stall, locking the door behind her as she
reached into her miniscule excuse for a purse and took out the carefully
hoarded ‘joint’ another friend had given her earlier.
Just as she lit the paper-wrapped bundle, she heard a sharp
click, like the sound of a door being locked.
“Hello? Is there someone
there?”
Silence filled the room as her
words faded away.
Thoroughly irritated, Lex
stooped down to look under the door of her stall, but saw no one in the small
bathroom with her.
She shrugged to herself, accepting that her nerves must be wound
tighter than she had thought, and sat down again on the stool, re-lighting the
extinguished joint.
Drawing the harsh smoke into
her lungs, Lex heard the slight noise again, just before the lights in the
bathroom blinked out, leaving her in darkness.
From the ceiling above her, a slim, silvered shaft of moonlight
slipped between the blades of the exhaust fan, providing the only illumination
in the room.
“Alright, this is enough. Who
the hell is in here? I don’t appreciate the childish pranks, so just stop it,
okay? I’m gonna finish my own business here and I’d suggest you get the fuck
out of here cause if you’re still around when I come out, there will be even
more hell to pay!”
Lex was filled with mixed
emotions. Rage at the joke she felt was being played on her, frustration due to
the uncertainty of who the joker might be, even a
slight fear that perhaps it wasn’t a joke.
She took another pull from the
miniscule joint, holding the smoke in her lungs as she tossed the small butt
into the toilet.
Just as she finally began to exhale, a black-gloved hand slipped
over her mouth, causing her to choke. Struggling to no avail, Lex tried to
glance behind her. All she managed to see was the gleam of the moonlight as it
slipped across the shining edge of the knife, just before being swallowed by
the darkness and the warmth of her throat as the blade slid through the flesh
with a thick, wet, tearing sound.
“The pay in Hell, can be quite attractive.”
